REPORT ON THE 2007 SASQUATCH FIVE-A-SIDE SOCCER TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY adidas

The tournament took place in Spokane, WA during the weekends of March 24-25 and March 31-April 1, 2007. A total of 235 teams entered, which is one less than last year. We played 458 matches. The first weekend Boys and Girls under 13 to Under 19 competed. The second weekend was reserved for Adults, Boys and Girls under 8 to under 12.

The weather was a mixed bag with rain and wind on the first Saturday, but when on April 1, the day we finished, was the most beautiful day of the year so far. Somehow, we didn’t miss the snow of past years at all.

We estimate that over 12,000 people came through the gates during the two weekends. Our vendors, CCS Concessions, Pizza Rita, Have Beans Will Travel, Spokane Soccer Center, Ron’s Kettle Corn and Azar’s were extremely pleased with that.

Spokane Soccer Center provided prizes for our drawings and give-aways. Diadora provided the game balls and other give-aways. We are grateful to both these long time supporters of the Five-a-Side. I don’t think that any one realizes how big a role Diadora plays in our tournament. Thank you Diadora.

About 60 referees from the Inland Soccer Referee’s Association were assigned and supervised by Art Hough, who did a superb job. Since most of our referees are rather young, ISRA instituted something new last year. Each field had two referees, a young, inexperienced referee and a senior referee. The senior referee tutored the young referee before, during and after the match. Also, the senior official could and would take over the match in case of difficulties. This took a lot of pressure and anxiety of the young officials. All the senior officials volunteered their time. THANKS REFEREES!! I thought it was a huge success. This tutoring program is a unique feature of the 5-a-Side.

We saw 5 cautions, four ejections, all for foul and abusive language and an injury game suspension in the adult portion of the tournament and 4 cautions plus two ejections in the youth tournament. The ejections were for “serious foul play”.

The annual Five-a-Side Soccer tournament in Spokane (this was our 23rd ) is a demanding task to run and organize. But, the joy we experience far makes up for any fatigue or discomfort. Especially this year, people’s attitude was great and thanks to the hard work of many the Five-a-Side ran smoother than ever.

I don’t want to finish this report without thanking Washington State Youth Soccer Association and its Board of Directors; WSYSA District VI; the trustees of Spokane Youth Sports Association for sanctioning the tournament; and the Spokane Valley Junior Soccer Association for so vigorously promoting the tournament. We are also grateful to the North Idaho soccer clubs, in particular the Sting, the Thunder and the Strikers for their year-after-year attendance and support.

Additional thanks must go to the Community Colleges of Spokane and our athletic secretary Nancy Zacher. Thanks also to our athletic trainers under the guidance of Phoebe Duke. I just wish that more people would understand the tremendous amount of knowledge about injuries these First Responders possess. In particular I want to thank the maintenance and security crew. It always amazes me how efficiently these people work. On Saturday night the place is a mess, on Sunday morning everything is spotless and ready to go. Thanks to all of you. I want to thank our new Athletic Director, Ken Burrus and Assistant A.D. Bobby Lee. A BIG thanks goes to our Facility manager, Dan Gilbert. Special thanks to our baseball and track teams for cooperating and allowing this event during their conference season. I feel that the immediate staff is dedicated and tireless, thanks to Jim Martinson and Keri Hilton (our women’s soccer coaches) Kenny Krestian and Matt Reilly our (men’s soccer coaches). Thanks to our CCS men and women soccer teams for helping out everywhere. A final thanks to Mary Anne Palmer for stepping in and running concessions.
