Coach Matthews is entering his fifth year as the Sasquatch pitching coach. Matthews graduated from Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, California, in 1996, where he was a three-time All-Mission League selection. After red shirting one year at Cal State University, Northridge, he played one year at Los Angeles Pierce College, completing his AA degree and was a WSC First-Team All-Conference selection. Matthews transferred to Gonzaga University in 1999 and completed his undergraduate degree in physical education in 2001. Coach Matthews completed his master’s degree in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University this last August.

While at Gonzaga, he played three years, receiving two First-Team All-Conference selections, and one All-Conference Honorable Mention. In his senior year Matthews was selected to the NCBWA Second Team All-American and Baseball America’s Third Team All-American. After college, Matthews played two years for the Detroit Tigers in their minor league system, where he earned the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week award. Matthews most recently was selected to the West Coast Conference/Rawlings Top 40 All-Time Players Team. In addition to being the Sasquatch pitching coach, Matthews is also the head coach of the Spokane RiverHawks of the WCCBL collegiate summer league. Before joining the Sasquatch, Matthews was the head assistant coach at Medical Lake High School, as well as serving as the assistant coach of the Spokane Bandits American legion team from 2002 to 2005.

Barry’s wife Sarah is a seventh grade math teacher at Glover Middle School. They have a beautiful daughter named Anna Christine, and are expecting their second in the spring of 2008.
