Spokane Sweeps Grays Harbor in a Four Game Series

IanAfter a schedule change and an extra day’s wait Spokane opened up the 2009 season with a series sweep of Grays Harbor Community College. Spokane was scheduled to play in the Dalles, Oregon to open the season. The weekend’s games were cancelled due to inclement weather. Instead GHCC and the Sasquatch traveled to Lewiston, Idaho to play a four game set at Lewis and Clark State College.

Spokane won the opening game 4-0 behind a strong start from Mike Richard. Richard went five shutout innings. Richard struck out six and walked one batter. Rex Ireland came on in relief to earn his first save of the season. Ireland scattered five hits and didn’t walk a Choker batter. Spokane was paced by Outfield Cam Christian at the plate. Christian had three hits in the game and scored two runs. Freshman first baseman Justin Murphy added two hits and an RBI in the game.

Spokane won the second game 14-6. Spokane Mark Purser led Spokane at the plate with four hits and three doubles while driving in four. Kelly Gau, Ian Atkinson and Cam Christian added two hits a piece for the Sasquatch. Starter Martin Aguirre earned the first win of his career. Aguirre struck out five in five innings while not allowing an earned run. Stewart Macy struck out three in two innings of relief.

Spokane won the third game 5-2. Starter Colby Crawford earned the win in the game. Crawford scattered six hits in his five shutout innings. Crawford had five strikeouts in the game. Rex Ireland, Stewart Macy and Mark Purser finished the game in relief. Matt Starr, Trevor Austin and Ian Atkinson all had two hits in the game. Justin Murphy scored two runs and added a double.

Cam Christian earned the win on the mound in the series finale. Christian struck out eight in five shutout innings. Justin Murphy threw two innings of scoreless relief while striking out two. Matt Starr, Mark Purser and Ian Atkinson led the way at the plate with two hits.

Spokane’s next series against Tacoma CC has been moved to Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman, Washington. Spokane and Tacoma will play double headers on both Saturday and Sunday March 7-8. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 11 am. Sunday’s Start time is 10 am.
